National Truth and Reconciliation Day

The high school I attended was where the rural indigenous teens were bused. Every day they had to get on a bus before 7am for a 40 minute ride to the school. Classes started at 9am but they had to come extra early because the bus driver had another route to attend to closer to the school. They also had to wait at the school as the bus drove the closer kids home and then picked them up around 4pm. This means their school day was roughly 7am to 5pm. In comparison my day was roughly 8am to 4pm. There was a part of the school that was “theirs”. No one but “the Indian kids”, as we ignorantly called them, went there before school, at lunch, or after school. And I mean NO ONE. The rest of us were either scared, anxious, or so unfamiliar with those kids that it never really occurred to us to go there. Don’t get me wrong, there was never any violence there. Day of Prepartion

Today we began to prepare the house and organize ourselves. There was lots of moving of large objects, rearranging of furniture and shopping for things we need like food and supplies. After lunch we enjoyed some time learning about Godly Play. In the words of their website : "Godly Play is based upon the recognition that children have an innate sense of the presence of God. All they lack is the appropriate language to help them identify and express it so it can be explored and strengthened. The Godly Play approach teaches classical Christian language in a way that enhances the child’s authentic experience of God so it can contribute to the creative life of the child and the world." Judy Steers taught us the basics of being a Godly Play Storyteller and then each of the leadership team volunteered to learn a story and prepare to present - first to the team before the participants arrive; and then to the whole group later in the program. The Value of Communication

Ok I got on the plane at 5:30am, it took off at 6am it flew for two uneventful hours and landed at 7am (don't forget the time difference). I quite happily found my luggage very quickly and then went looking for my ride. No sign of my ride. Ok maybe traffic is bad - which I have found out is pretty much always the case in Toronto. I waited... and I waited... and I waited... After two hours I dug out Judy 's phone number and frantically called her. "Um, Judy? Yeah, I've been in Toronto airport for the last two hours and am a bit worried that something happend to my ride." Judy informed me that she wasn't expecting me to land in Toronto until 10:30am. This is when I realized that I had not communicated the change in my travel plans to her. Originally I was to leave from Sydney, NS layover in Montreal for a couple of hours and then arrive in Toronto... I changed this last week so I could go to a meeting in the Halifax area.
